Q Part 2 of Final Paper DUE ---- 1. 2. LITERATURE REVIEW – (about 5 pages total) 3. Background on this Organization/Agency a. b. Organizational History: When was this organization/agency formed and why? Describe its history and changes it’s undergone since its inception. c. b. c. Organization/Structure of Agency, Clientele, Mission/Goals: In this section you will provide detailed background information about the organization you’re researching. Some of this will be obtained from the course textbook, some from agency reports and materials, some from additional sources. The reader should gain a thorough understanding of the structure and function/purpose of this agency/organization. d. c. d. Staffing: You will delve more deeply into the staffing aspect in this section. What are the positions within this organization? Give an overview of the agency’s organizational chart and ways to move from entry level to more advanced positions. Then, specify the typical qualifications and training required for your chosen position/career-- the typical nature of the work, patterns of recruitment, current and historical hiring trends, entry-level salary expectations, local, national and regional variations in salaries, benefits and promotional opportunities, the typical career trajectory, related professional associations and the current problems and issues facing employees in their profession? How many people are employed by this agency (at various levels and/or jurisdictions)? How is this organization funded & by whom (e.g., City government; Non-profit; etc)? Is there a union for this agency/organization—if so, provide some information about its role/function, size, strength, etc (e.g., Correctional Office Unions in many states are extremely powerful, as are Police Unions). e. d. e. Challenges, Stakeholders, etc: Discuss issues that may arise between the organization, the union if applicable, politicians and the public. What are some of the challenges this agency faces in effectively addressing its mission (e.g., many local police agencies face public mistrust)? What are some of the broader challenges facing this organization (e.g., many non-profits struggle to maintain their funding and their ability to offer programming/services can be deeply affected by political tides and funding streams). Describe and discuss some of the key challenges this organization faces. f. e. f. Academic Research Pertaining to this Organization/Agency (the largest section of the Literature Review; 3-4 pages): g. Using the SDSU library (conduct searches in the public administration abstracts: please consult with a librarian and/or the Course Teaching Assistant, if you are unfamiliar with how to do this!), you will use academic research to broaden your perspective/understanding of this agency/organization, its role within society, and issues pertaining to it. What does empirical research tell us about some particular aspect (of your choice) of this agency? You will discuss at least 3 academic studies (again, from reputable, peer-reviewed public administration/criminal justice/criminology/sociology journals) that examine a particular aspect of the profession of your choice. Try to focus on an issue that is pertinent to the job you hope to attain. For example, if you’re interested in local-level policing, and aspire to be involved in the community, perhaps you’d search for articles pertaining to some aspect of community policing. You’ll find hundreds of research articles pertaining to that—as you peruse them, you can narrow down your search to a particular aspect of community policing (e.g., community policing and juveniles). So, think about what topic interests you about your organization/agency of choice, do some library searches on the issue, then read and revise your search (narrow it down) and read some more and revise search terms some more. You should plan on this process taking up a good chunk of time! You’ll use at least 3 of academic research journal articles (that are all related to the same theme) in your final paper. They should be from 2009 or later. In synthesizing and summarizing the various authors’ findings, be sure you note their: research question, research design/methodology and sample, and findings. You will compare/contrast the various researchers’ findings on this particular issue. Typically one would use a LOT more than 3 articles when writing a literature review. I encourage you to use more than 3 but will only require that you use/cite 3. I will post a couple of pertinent chapters and informational videos on Writing a Literature Review on Blackboard (under Documents) and we will discuss how to do this in class.
